Sky News host James Morrow says the main reason Australia needs to help put down a rebellion in the Solomon Islands is to keep China “out of the region”. It comes as Prime Minister Scott Morrison responded to the request of Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare to provide assistance following days of rioting. On Thursday, Mr Morrison announced 23 AFP members will support Solomon Islands Police in riot control, while a further 50 AFP will be deployed to support security at critical infrastructure. “The decision was made in essence to support this call from the Sogavare government … simply because if we didn’t, then he might have called in the Chinese to help,” Mr Morrow told Sky News host Peta Credlin. “And that would have led to more of a Chinese presence in the Solomon Islands than I think anyone would be comfortable with. “The great irony of this is that we are in there helping a Chinese supporting prime minister put down a rebellion by pro-Taiwanese citizens in the name of keeping China out of the region."<p>Sky News host James Morrow says the main reason Australia needs to help put down a rebellion in the Solomon Islands is to keep China &ldquo;out of the region&rdquo;.
