The comments were made as furloughed workers missed their first paychecks.

White House chief economic adviser Kevin Hassett said furloughed workers are “better off” because they didn’t have to use vacation days over the holidays due to the government shutdown.

“In some sense, they’re better off,” says the president’s top economic adviser of federal employees not getting paychecks.

“A huge share of government workers were going to take vacation days.... And then we have a shutdown...so then they have the vacation, but they don't have to use their vacation days,” Kevin Hassett
